The Bruce Willis movie "The Fifth Element" had two great features in it:
(1) That girl...
http://lestyoubejudged.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/5th-element2.jpg
(2) Autopiloted cars that move in three dimensions...
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/25/Valerian_FifthElement2.jpg
Well, regarding (2) we as a technological society are moving along quite nicely. In fact, in all the discussions of transit, many planners and thinkers are ignoring auto-piloted vehicles entirely, while my reading of the technology is that it is soon to be here. I'll go out on a limb and say in 10 years we will have working autopilot for personal vehicles.
What to expect in cars of tomorrow

| Quote: | Now, Toyota has begun introducing low-speed cruise control in Japan, part of the $1-million an hour it invests in research and development. Stephen Beatty, managing director of Toyota Canada Inc., says the ultimate aim is to move from the car as autonomous tank (a heavy vehicle protecting passengers and operating independently of other vehicles) to the car as a sort of communal calculator (avoiding trouble in the first place by talking to other cars and knowing where it is in relation to them).
“We talk about intelligent transportation and this notion of cars running in almost automated trains down heavy corridor routes [while] being under full independent control when you break away from those routes,” Mr. Beatty says. |

Shuttle cabs that drive themselves and run on electricity are to be deployed for residents and workers in the six square kilometre city.

In case you’re wondering these nifty vehicles won’t be running on a rail system but will use RFID and magnetic sensors. |

Proliferation of Advanced Cruise Control
| Quote: | | Laser- or radar-guided stop-and-go cruise control is already commonplace among luxury automakers, and we expect these systems to be offered on all but the least expensive vehicles in the future. Although this kind of tech is billed as a safety feature, a car that can prevent tailgating or stop itself without human intervention is likely to encourage and reinforce bad driving habits. Autopilot can’t be far behind. |

Driverless Audi TT to climb Pikes Peak
http://www.calgaryherald.com/cars/Driverless+Audi+climb+Pikes+Peak/2584186/story.html
| Quote: | It's hardly surprising that an Audi TT two-seat sports car would climb Pikes Peak, along the famously twisty 30-kilometre road that ascends to 4,300 metres above sea level. In fact, the Colorado mountain has hosted a well-known race to the top since 1916.
Less common, however, is that the car would drive itself to the top at race speeds, with no one inside it.
That's what's planned to happen in September, when the third autonomous vehicle developed by the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford University, or CARS, tackles the fabled hill-climb. CARS is funded in part by Volkswagen, Honda, Toyota and Nissan. |

Your smart car parks itself – less sprawl; more livable cities
http://carswilldisappear.wordpress.com/about/
| Quote: | | The purpose of this blog is to promote discussion of the need, feasibility, benefits and opportunities inherent in ITS-Park systems: where parking spaces are found, reserved and paid for using the Internet; where Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) capable cars, that is “smartcars”, drive autonomously through parking garages and park themselves. |

Robotic Audi TTS To Speed On Its Own Without A Driver
| Quote: |
Humanoid robots are definitely cool, but what about cars that drive themselves? The team at the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (CARS) is looking to send a robotic Audi TTS racing off at high speed up the tight bends that lead to Pikes Peak without a driver. The car, nicknamed Shelley, will be attempting a timed race in September. |

Stanford’s Robot Car to Drive from SF to LA Next Spring
| Quote: | Prof. Sebastian Thrun at Stanford University is world famous for leading a team of students and engineers to develop an autonomous car that won the DARPA Grand Challenge in 2005. The history making car “Stanley” now resides at the Smithsonian.
Since then, his next mission was set to develop a vehicle that can achieve urban driving. The team went on to develop “Junior” and during that process in 2007, won second place in the Urban Challenge. But the goal had always been grander – to create a car that can drive itself from downtown San Francisco to downtown Los Angeles without human intervention.
[...]
Q. The last time we talked, you were working on developing a fully autonomous vehicle that can drive on its own from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Can you give us an update on this project?
A. The project is underway and we are making good progress. For example, we are now able to handle traffic lights and to localize reliably on highways, which is important for lane keeping. We can now speed up the vehicle in traffic. Also we are much better able to track the other cars around us and we can find and identify pedestrians.

Milestone 1: Self Parking Cars
The emergence of self-parking cars is a Milestone #1 in the presentation of fully auto-piloted cars in the next decade. With self-parking and optimized parking, you can then imagine that we will be able to optimize the spaces for parking (because the car can park better than the human).
Milestone #2 might be a car which can drop people off, then go and self park in a lot where no humans would be. When you're ready to leave the mall, airport, etc., you could then "call" your car to come pick you up.
This would be a gradual process because the car would be auto-piloting away from humans and yet serve a valuable purpose of door to door service. It would also be a step towards the ideal of self-piloted taxis that can be called up and bring people door to door, or door to store/work/depot.
The Skinny on Self-Parking

| Quote: | | Now, a handful of other manufacturers have rolled out their own self-parking systems, which guide cars into parking spaces with little help from the driver. Five manufacturers—Ford, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercury and Toyota—are currently offering self parking on nine different 2010 models, according to Edmunds.com. We tested the self-parking systems on the Toyota Prius, Ford Escape SUV and the forthcoming 2011 BMW 5-Series to see how effective and practical they are, and to get a better sense of whether they are worth the extra cost, which can run up to $4,500. |

Volkswagen’s Autonomous Car: Drivers Unneccesary
http://technologizer.com/2010/04/16/volkswagen-autonomous-car/
| Quote: | | On Thursday afternoon, I went for a very short ride–maybe forty yards–in the back seat of a diesel Volkswagen Passat. Here’s why I’m writing about it on a site called Technologizer: The car had no driver. I was attending the formal dedication of the Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab (VAIL) at Stanford University–complete with a ceremonial ribbon cutting by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The car in question was Junior 3, a collaborative effort between VW and Stanford researchers. |
