Well, regarding (2) we as a technological society are moving along quite nicely. In fact, in all the discussions of transit, many planners and thinkers are ignoring auto-piloted vehicles entirely, while my reading of the technology is that it is soon to be here. I'll go out on a limb and say in 10 years we will have working autopilot for personal vehicles.

Driverless Audi TT to climb Pikes Peak

Milestone 1: Self Parking Cars
The emergence of self-parking cars is a Milestone #1 in the presentation of fully auto-piloted cars in the next decade. With self-parking and optimized parking, you can then imagine that we will be able to optimize the spaces for parking (because the car can park better than the human).
Milestone #2 might be a car which can drop people off, then go and self park in a lot where no humans would be. When you're ready to leave the mall, airport, etc., you could then "call" your car to come pick you up.
This would be a gradual process because the car would be auto-piloting away from humans and yet serve a valuable purpose of door to door service. It would also be a step towards the ideal of self-piloted taxis that can be called up and bring people door to door, or door to store/work/depot.
