When charities such as Red Cross show late night infomercials with Sally Struthers or Parnell Roberts they oft times state that some families in Africa|Guatmala|Elsewhere live on less than $2 a day or that you can feed a family of 6 for 33 cents.

What exactly do they mean? Do they mean that the US dollar is worth scads of the local current units and have immense buying power? Or that they really do live on $1 a day and buy like a discount bag of frozen peas and each kid gets to suck on 10 or 20 of them?

I really want to know what they are talking about since I have heard this metric used ever since I went to St. Anthony of Padua elementary school and we used to put our dimes and nickles in a plastic piggy bank that tipped its little hat with each coin. We sent this money to the missions, where presumably my dime bought either some coq au vin for a family of nine or a handful of rice that had to last through the rainy season.

Please, someone enlighten me!!
